Equine Hyperbarics

Case Studies

Roll The Gold

Horse presented with a severe staph infection secondary to an injection below the knee. Conventional treatments with antibiotics and anti-inflammatories, failed to improve the condition.

“The pictures pretty well speak for themselves, but I would have to say that I have never seen a more severe infection respond so rapidly as this one did. I think that anytime you have such a massive and extensive infection, the Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber in conjunction with your routine treatment, is the way to go.”

Kaptain

“Kaptain”, a four year old Clydesdale gelding was brutally attacked by a Clydesdale stallion in July 2002. He sustained multiple, full thickness wounds, deep abrasions and contusions to the right side of his body. The most severe wound was to the scapular region involving an area 18 inches by 12 inches, with total damage of the skin, sub cue and superficial muscle layers. Due to the severity of the wound the horse was suffering from infection and fluid loss. The treatment for the first ten days consisted of antimicrobials, anti-inflammatories, IV fluids and daily wound care. Despite aggressive treatment thehorses condition continued to deteriorate. He was anorexic, depressed and developing severe edema secondary to low total protein. Ten days after the initial injury, Kaptain began Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Treatments. The results were dramatic.

“After the first treatment his attitude improved greatly and he began to eat immediately. I feel the HBOT saved Kaptain’s life and I would not hesitate to recommend its use.”

Cats Don’t Dance was one of 5 saddlebreds believed to have been injected with an unknown, caustic substance in Lexington, Ky, in July 2003.

“HBOT in conjunction with regional perfusion with antimicrobials resulted in rapid resolution of this chronic (5 mos.) severe case of septic osteitis of the medial sesamoid secondary to septic tenosynovitis of the digital sheath.”

– C.R. Johnson, DVM, DACVS

After five months of aggressive therapy including prolonged courses of antibiotics and two surgical procedures, this horse presented for hyperbarics.

“Without hyperbaric oxygen therapy and regional perfusion, this horse had no chance of survival.”
– Greg Bonenclark, DVM, DACVS
